David Lewis, Chairman of EWCA, said:
"The Esher & Walton Conservative Association is saddened to learn of the death of Baroness Thatcher on Monday 8th April 2013.
Margaret Thatcher was a Member of Parliament from 1959 – 1992, Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 – 1990 and Prime Minister from 1979 – 1990. She led the Conservative Party to victory at three successive General Elections in 1979, 1983 and 1987.
Margaret Thatcher’s impact was far reaching both nationally and internationally with her achievements ranging from the transformation of the British economy and reclaiming the Falkland Islands following the Argentinian invasion to playing a crucial role in the ending of the Cold War.
However, many of the members, friends and supporters of the Esher & Walton Conservative Association will have their own memories of Margaret Thatcher; in fact many of them were drawn into playing an active role in politics by Margaret Thatcher’s leadership and vision for the country.
The Conservative Party owes Margaret Thatcher a great debt of gratitude. The full impact of her premiership will be debated by historians for years to come but, as Conservatives, we are privileged to have been led by a truly inspirational leader and our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time."
Chris Platt, President of EWCA added this tribute:
"I was incredibly saddened to learn that Baroness Thatcher passed away this morning. I know that many in the constituency personally knew Baroness Thatcher or had met her and they will feel this loss deeply. Margaret Thatcher was an inspiring Conservative politician and formidable Prime Minister. We have lost a great leader of the 20th Century and our thoughts are with Baroness Thatcher’s family and friends.
Baroness Thatcher, 87, was one of Britain’s greatest Conservative politicians. Margaret Thatcher was a Member of Parliament from 1959-1992 and Prime Minister from 1979-1990. Baroness Thatcher is survived by her two children, Carol and Mark.
I have no doubt that Margaret Thatcher will be remembered as one of the world’s greatest leaders. She helped bring the Cold War to an end and as Britain’s first female Prime Minister, was and remains an icon for democracy around the globe."
