Claygate Conservative councillor Geoff Herbert has arranged for a hands-on motor mechanics course at Claygate Youth Club from the GASP Motor Project, a charity with SCC funding.
The Project teaches young people (aged 14 - 19) basic motor mechanics and practical engineering skills.
GASP has a modern workshop at Albury, and also provide a mobile service. Qualified mechanics run the sessions; young people work in small groups, in a safe and professional space. They start to know their way around a vehicle and learn how to work as a team. These courses help improve the lives of young people by giving them new direction, and increasing their training and employability. They help to build practical skills and encourage self-confidence and self-belief.
It is hoped to run the Claygate course for 2-3 days in October or November. Youth Club leaders are talking to local young people not in Education, Employment or Training, and they are showing considerable interest. If the course is successful, Geoff will work with the GASP team follow up with more in depth and more regular courses.
Information on GASP and the course is on http://gaspmotorproject.org and on the attached.
