The Liberal Democrat-run Elmbridge Borough Council is withdrawing completely from running our community centres and is planning to scrap the Meals on Wheels service entirely.
These centres are lifelines for elderly and vulnerable residents, providing hot meals, social events, and support. The Council’s so-called “Connected Communities” plan is nothing more than a smokescreen for cuts. They’re shifting the burden onto overstretched charities and volunteers, with no clear plan, no guarantees, and no council support.
Local Conservatives have consistently opposed these £1 million cuts to essential services like Meals on Wheels, which so many elderly and low-income families rely on. The funding exists, what’s missing is the political will to prioritise community care. That is why we are calling on the Council to:
- Halt the withdrawal from the six community centres;
- Guarantee the continuation of Meals on Wheels;
- Retain direct responsibility and funding for these essential services;
- Be honest with residents about the scale of the cuts and the risks involved.
