The Conservatives have retained control of Elmbridge Council albeit with a reduced majority following the borough elections on May 3rd.
Discontent with the national Government is thought to have played a part in delivering a disappointing night for the local party, which saw our majority reduced by three seats and target seats of Walton Central, Claygate and Long Ditton lost - in some cases narrowly.
However, incumbent councillors - including the Leader of the Council John O'Reilly - were comfortably re-elected and the Conservatives are pressing on with the business of local government, with renewed commitment to delivering quality services to Elmbridge residents and looking after the borough's finances responsibly.
Cllr John O’Reilly, Leader of Elmbridge Borough Council, said: "The good news from May 3rd is that we retain a workable majority (of four if we hold Esher at the by-election on June 21st), that all incumbent Conservative Councillors were safely returned; and that we warmly welcome Lorraine Samuels who was elected for Oatlands Park to the Group.
"And we cannot overlook the sensational result in Molesey East where Steve Bax, who has been campaigning brilliantly for over a year, obtained a phenomenal 18% swing to the Conservatives, cutting the RA majority to just over 100 votes.
"But it was still galling to lose three seats (two to the RAs and 1 to the LibDems) two of which fell by the slenderest of margins: had the national picture not been so dismal, these would have been held. This year we had an incredibly strong field of candidates who worked tirelessly in their wards with their teams of helpers. We thank them all.
"We commence the new municipal year in good cheer and determined to build on our record over the last 6 years for keeping the Council Tax low, bearing down on costs, and safeguarding our much valued services. EBC possesses a sound financial base and strong management team to navigate the uncertain paths ahead.
"Now, one more united push to ensure Tim Oliver in Esher gets back to the Council on June 21st. "
The Conservatives would like to thank everyone who supported our candidates at the election.
